SHILLONG, JUL 15: The North Eastern Council has cleared over ₹13.58 crore for Meghalaya between May and June 2026 under the SoNEC scheme, targeting improvements in healthcare, education, renewable energy and community infrastructure.

A major component is the installation of a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine at Tura Civil Hospital, expected to expand diagnostic access for patients in Garo Hills and nearby districts.

In education, funds were earmarked for Shillong Polytechnic and a new Multi-Disciplinary Training-cum-Resource Centre being set up by NERCORMS to boost technical training.

For culture and public facilities, NEC backed the Seng Khasi Cultural Complex and Seinraij Jowai Community Hall, along with upgrade works at Iewduh Market to improve conditions for vendors and buyers.

On the energy front, NEC approved preliminary surveys for three hydro projects — Mawblei, Myntdu Leshka Stage-II and Selim — to prepare for future clean power generation.

The NEC-funded Shillong–Umroi Airport Road was also completed in June, aimed at improving connectivity to the airport and supporting tourism and commerce.

In addition, the Council disbursed ₹18.93 crore to regional institutions, NGOs and universities across the Northeast.

In Meghalaya, this included support for the Industry Academia Research Conclave-2025 at NIT-Meghalaya and the Miss & Mister Beauty Pageant-2026 at NEIGRIHMS.

NEC stated the investments are part of efforts to strengthen essential services and drive sustainable growth in the state.
