SHILLONG, AUG 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said the government has invited the Khasi Students’ Union for talks after officially writing to the organisation on its five-point charter of demands.
Stating that a response is expected by this evening or tomorrow, Sangma said the government will clarify all points raised by the KSU and assured that work has been progressing on most fronts.
“There has been some communication gap. Whatever clarifications are required, we will give them in the joint meeting,” he said.
The CM, however, ruled out any interference on the demand to release arrested KSU leaders and revoke MPDA and MMPO invoked against them.
“Law will take its own course. It will be improper to change rules for one organisation or individual,” he asserted.
On the investigation into the August 19 violence, Sangma said five masked miscreants have been identified and further action is underway.He also said the government will tighten SOPs and impose stricter conditions for granting permission for rallies and processions.
Denying any intelligence failure, the CM said the administration had deployed personnel along the rally route but was caught by surprise by the scale of violence.
“It was unprecedented and never seen before. It is easy to call it intelligence failure, but there was no such failure,” he added.
