SHILLONG, AUG 24: Asserting that those who attempted to create fear following the August 19 violence will not be spared, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said citizens need not worry as the government will take strong action.
“Whatever happened was very unfortunate. There are people who try to create fear and we will not leave them. We will take strong action,” Sangma said.
He said while inconvenience was caused to the public due to the fallout in the neighbouring state, the matter is being controlled through discussion and negotiation.
“Now that we have got all of that behind us, we should move in a positive manner,” he said, urging all associations and stakeholders to ensure peaceful protests do not turn violent.
“The right to peaceful protest does not mean you can take law into your own hands or harm innocent people. Society must also come out against this,” he said.
Sangma said his government has always been open to dialogue but warned against crossing the line.
“If anybody does, we will take action as per law,” he added.
On apprehensions among tourists, the CM said law and order incidents do occur, but swift measures have been taken to prevent further escalation and to rebuild confidence through joint outreach by stakeholders of both states.
