SHILLONG, AUG 24: The Jaintia Students’ Union has filed a PIL in the Meghalaya High Court against the July 31 public hearing for Shree Cement’s proposed mining project at Lum Syrman, Elaka Nongkhlieh.
The PIL filed by Education Secretary Bocheru Mi Pohsnem and General Secretary Neilkee Mukhim termed the hearing a 46-minute sham where stakeholders were blockaded.
The JSU said it approached the court after the state government failed to act on its representations and FIRs, even as matters before the MHRC and NGT are pending.
It alleged that armed goons assaulted protesters and attacked its ambulance, injuring driver Rapbor Mukhim, while police used tear gas on youth and diluted the FIR to shield attackers.
“We hope the High Court won’t see us as mere cockroaches and will deliver justice,” the JSU said, warning of intense agitation if cognizance is not taken.
