SHILLONG, JUL 17: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday attended the Behdeinkhlam festival at Tuber in Jaiñtia Hills and announced a new government scheme to support religious and cultural infrastructure across the state.
This was his second visit to the festival.
Calling it one of the biggest Behdeinkhlam celebrations in the region, Sangma said the event reflects Meghalaya’s identity.
“This is what makes us who we are. This is our culture and it is very important that we keep it alive,” he said.
He noted that the festival, traditionally held to ward off diseases and evil, remains relevant today.
“It is very important that we pass it on to our generation” with strong participation, he added.
Announcing the new programme, Sangma said it will cover Seinraij, Seng Khasi, Christian denominations and other religious groups.
The scheme will provide support for museums, galleries and other initiatives to document history and culture.
He cited a recent proposal from Presbyterian leaders for a museum in memory of Thomas Jones, and said similar assistance would be given to the Catholic Church and other faiths.
The Chief Minister also said a proposal by Seinraij Tuber for a gallery and museum at Tuber, pegged at Rs 10 crore, would be included.
However, allocations will be decided under a comprehensive plan to ensure no community is left out.
“The idea is to give infrastructural support and ensure that the history, the culture is also captured,” Sangma said.
