SHILLONG, AUG 28: Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla on Friday assured the Assembly that the government will conduct a proper study on the increasing number of caesarean deliveries in the state.
The assurance came after Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma raised concern during Question Hour over fewer normal deliveries.
Sangma said while he and his siblings were born through home deliveries, today mothers are increasingly undergoing C-sections and sought data on the trend.
In reply, Shylla said Meghalaya’s C-section rate is still below the national average but conceded it is a concern. He said the department avoids C-sections unless there are complications.
He attributed the trend partly to changing health conditions, noting that women have become weaker compared to the past and that high fertility – particularly during third and fourth childbirths – impacts maternal energy.
Sangma said the state should not compare with elsewhere and must be the first to understand why this unusual trend is emerging.
The minister assured that a study is already underway to identify the factors behind the rise.
