SHILLONG, AUG 27: VPP MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang on Thursday accused Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma of humiliating deficit teachers by claiming they earn Rs 4.5 lakh per month.
Participating in a short duration discussion on education moved by Paul Lyngdoh, Marbaniang said even the senior most teacher in St Anthony’s College as per UGC scale gets around Rs 3.5 lakh.
“Sarcastically I can say he was trying to humiliate the teachers, especially the deficit teachers,” he said, asserting teachers from lower primary to higher education deserve the best salary.
Marbaniang warned that lowering education quality is enough to destroy a nation. “The collapse of education in itself is the collapse of a nation,” he said, adding that the education scenario from KG to PG is in a very sad state.
He said he is a product of Government Boys Higher Secondary School, St Anthony’s College and NEHU and cited colleagues who returned to serve the state despite Fulbright and post-doctoral offers abroad.
He flagged that vacancies in government schools, deficit and government colleges have been vacant for 2-3 years.
