SHILLONG, JUL 17: FKJGP vice president Kitboklang Nongphlang on Friday said the Meghalaya government must go beyond passing resolutions and deliver real action to safeguard the rights of indigenous communities.

Speaking at a KSU programme to mark the 191st death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, Nongphlang said the Khasi community continues to demand special laws for land and identity protection despite its unique history.

He recalled Tirot Sing’s words — “It is better to die as a free king than to live as a slave king” — and urged unity among the youth to prevent outsiders from gaining control of the state.

Citing pending issues, he pointed to the 2018 resolution on including Khasi in the Eighth Schedule, the 2019 resolution on ILP, and the CM’s recent statement on banning uranium mining.

“The Government should not stop at just passing resolutions. There must be concrete solutions to fulfill the long-pending demands of the people,” he said.

Nongphlang also alleged that while civil society groups are pushing the government, some forces continue to “confuse and mislead the public.”
