Assam-Meghalaya border talks on hold till Assam Cabinet expansion: Deputy CM

SHILLONG, JUN 3: The second phase of border talks between Assam and Meghalaya on the six remaining areas of difference will resume only after the expansion of the Assam Cabinet, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Wednesday.
Responding to queries, Tynsong said the process is on pause pending ministerial reconstitution in Assam.
“Well, I think see if you talk about the regional committee as far as the issue of differences that we have between Meghalaya and Assam, now we are waiting again because as you all know that the again the constitution of the cabinet, expansion of the cabinet is being awaited,” Tynsong said.
He added that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has conveyed his willingness to continue the discussions but asked Meghalaya to wait.
“Even the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, he has already expressed his willingness to again continue the talks, the inspection of both the regional committees but he requested us to please wait till the expansion of the ministry is completed,” the Deputy CM said.
Tynsong said the delay would ensure proper representation in the panels.
“So that the ministers concerned, who are going to be entrusted will also be there in that regional committee,” he said.
The second phase of talks covers six areas of difference: Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Desh Doomreah, Block-I & Block-II, and Psiar-Khanduli.
The first phase resolved disputes in six other areas in March 2022.
