SHILLONG, AUG 19: Cabinet Minister and MDA spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla on Wednesday urged the Khasi Students’ Union to engage in talks with the government to address its demands.
On the ongoing KSU protests, Shylla said the government is open to discussion and willing to listen.
“Yes, definitely we are ready for talks. I want to make it very clear that the government is open for discussion. I request and urge the KSU to come and have dialogue with the government. That is the way forward,” he said.
The KSU’s five-point charter includes demands to scrap the July 31, 2026 public hearing for Shree Cement in East Jaintia Hills, which it alleges was “pre-arranged,” and action against the DC, SP, senior police and MSPCB officials over alleged obstruction.
The union has also sought full implementation of the MRSSA, 2016 till an ILP is in place with facilitation centres at 18 entry points in Khasi and Jaintia Hills and Dorbar Shnong-led verification.
Other demands are immediate rollout of the amended Migrant Workmen Act, 2020, recruitment reforms at NEIGRIHMS including an 80:20 female-to-male nurse ratio and proper reservation for Khasis, Jaintias and Garos, and removal of interviews for Grade B, C and D posts with SOPs for all recruitment boards.
