SHILLONG, OCT 13: To expedite the closure of Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL), the state cabinet on Tuesday approved writing off Rs 24.43 crore owed by the company to two state government departments.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the company owes Rs 8.9 crore as sales tax to the taxation department and Rs 15.53 crore as royalty to the Directorate of Mineral Resources.
These liabilities are still reflected in MCCL’s books, and the company cannot be wound up without clearing them, he said.
“The decision to close MCCL was taken long back. The amounts to be paid to the employees have been completed and the commitment we had with them has been fulfilled,” Sangma said.
He said the write-off was opted for as it is only a book transfer since MCCL is a government-owned company.
“The state government would have to pay MCCL and MCCL would pay back to the departments. To avoid unnecessary delay and inconvenience, the cabinet has decided to write it off. There is no financial impact,” the chief minister added.
