SHILLONG, APR 17: Hill State People’s Democratic Party president KP Pangniang on Friday said the settlement of the interstate boundary with Assam remains a key priority for the party and would be “another milestone” for the state government to take forward.
“Another important issue of the party, like the settlement of the interstate boundary, will be another milestone that the government of the state will take forward,” Pangniang told reporters.
He said the HSPDP had already reminded the government to resume negotiations.
“Last year, we submitted a reminder from the party to the government to continue the second phase of border talks with Assam,” he said.
Pangniang noted that six of the 12 areas of difference had already been taken up. “As you are aware, besides the 12 areas of differences the government of Meghalaya and Assam have tried their best to find ways and means of resolving those 6 areas of differences and now we have the remaining six areas of differences,” he said.
According to him, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had indicated that talks would restart after the Assam elections.
“So recently, the chief minister told us that as and when the Assam election is over, they will resume the border talks,” Pangniang stated.
He added that the party would soon meet the chief minister again on the issue.
“Within these few days again the party has decided to meet the chief minister to resume talks for the remaining six areas of differences for resolving the long pending interstate boundary dispute with Assam. We hope the government will look into the matter,” he said.
