SHILLONG, MAY 22: Citing threats to public safety and traffic flow, district authorities will begin evicting hawkers who have encroached on the Right of Way along the newly built Shillong-Dawki road.
The move follows a May 15 meeting chaired by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) RM Kurbah.
NHIDCL, PMU-Mylliem, had flagged encroachments by hawkers at Rilbong Point, 3½ Mile Upper Shillong, and 7th Mile Upper Shillong, along with an unauthorised parking lot at Rilbong Point.
Officials noted the encroachments “may pose high risk to the general public, the hawkers, as well as for vehicular movement.”
A joint eviction drive will be conducted by Shillong Traffic Police, PWD (Roads) NH Division, and NHIDCL. Before removal, “prior awareness” will be given to all concerned parties, the meeting decided.
As part of enforcement, NHIDCL will mark the acquired RoW boundary.
The SP (Traffic) has been asked to install barricades to stop vehicle parking within the RoW and post police personnel at the affected sites.
The Shillong-Dawki road is a critical route, and officials said clearing the RoW is necessary to ensure safe pedestrian and vehicular movement.
