SHILLONG, JUN 5: The Meghalaya Assembly’s Committee on Environment on Friday observed World Environment Day today with a tree plantation drive at the Assembly premises in Khyndailad, Shillong, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The programme was led by Committee Chairman Rakkam A Sangma and attended by members MLAs Ollan Singh Suin, Arbinstone B Marak, and Nujorki Sungoh.
Officers of the Assembly Secretariat and officials from the Social Forestry Department were also present.
Around 30 saplings were then planted within the Assembly campus, underscoring the legislature’s commitment to a greener environment.
Speaking to the media after the programme, Rakkam A Sangma stressed the collective responsibility of citizens in protecting the environment.
He urged the public to actively take part in tree plantation and conservation efforts to secure a sustainable future for coming generations.
Sangma noted that climate change is increasingly impacting Meghalaya, with rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, water scarcity, and reduced rainfall emerging as major concerns.
He called for greater public awareness and community-driven action on environmental conservation. He added that the Committee on Environment continues to address public concerns related to environmental protection and sustainable development, and will keep working in the interest of the people.
He also acknowledged the State Government’s ongoing initiatives to conserve and protect the environment.
Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma said the observance of World Environment Day must go beyond symbolic plantation drives.
“Our commitment is not only to plant saplings but also to nurture and protect them until they mature and contribute meaningfully to the environment,” he said. “Planting a tree is only the beginning. Our responsibility is to ensure it survives and flourishes.”
