SHILLONG, MAY 28: The Shillong City District unit of the United Democratic Party has formally expressed “disappointment” over what it called a delay in responding to queries and a lack of consultation in the selection of the party’s candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha byelection.

In a letter dated addressed to the UDP president, Shillong City District Secretary Tirot Sing Suchiang said the unit had passed a resolution on May 25 at a meeting held at the party office at 7:00 pm.

“We want to formally register our disappointment regarding the delay in response to address our previous queries submitted to you via letter in the month of January 2026,” the letter stated.

It added that the unit had “reached out to your office several occasions regarding this issue” over the past few months.

“As party’s workers we believe in a transparent communication and responsiveness which is the key to a democratic process, it is disheartening to be ignored when seeking basic information. This issue not only affect the Shillong city but the whole party as well,” Suchiang wrote.

The letter also raised objections to the manner in which the MP candidate for the byelection was finalised.

“Another concern is the selection and finalisation of the M.P. Candidate for the byelection, which we believe was done without proper consultation with the party’s workers especially the Shillong City District which happens to be the base of the Candidate,” it said.

The unit urged the party leadership to act without further delay.

“Therefore, we respectfully request you to immediately address these matters. As concerned party workers, we look forward to your prompt and timely response in addressing these issues,” the letter said.
