Smit is the traditional seat of power of the Hima Khyrim (Kingdom of Khyrim) a sub-tribe of the Khasis. The Nongkrem dance, is performed in Smit between October and November. Smit has an old traditional house, the iing shad, believed to be more than 100 years old.
