SHILLONG, AUG 25: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said 666 out of 6,188 Anganwadi centres are operating from rented buildings and the government is not investing in temporary premises.
“These are two separate issues. We don’t make investment for construction in temporary buildings,” Sangma told the Assembly in reply to TMC MLA Dr Mizanur Kazi.
He said construction and renovation of 2,148 centres has been taken up with Rs 64 crore from EAP in convergence with MGNREGS and C&RD, of which 1,670 are complete.
The remaining will be finished shortly. In most rented cases, land is not available, he added.
On nutrition, the CM said hot cooked meals for 3-6 year-olds and weekly take-home ration for 6 months-3 years, pregnant women and adolescents are provided for 25 days a month, with regular checks and social audits. Eggs twice a week will be introduced soon.
Citing NFHS data, he said stunting in under-5 children has fallen from 46% to 35% in three years and overall malnourishment to 36%, higher than national average decline. The 1000-days programme has been launched to bring it down to zero, he said.
