SHILLONG, AUG 25: The tourist taxi standoff between Assam and Meghalaya following the August 19 violence has been resolved, Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira said on Tuesday.
“There were no tourists coming in and how will they be able to come as the roads were blocked,” Shira said, adding that talks between the two Chief Ministers ended the impasse.
“There should not be any more ban or blockade now. The tourist association from Assam should allow vehicles from Meghalaya and vice versa,” he said.
Shira said the state will compensate for damage to Assam vehicles. “Whatever damages caused to Assam vehicles will be compensated by the Government of Meghalaya,” he said.
On losses faced by hoteliers and homestay owners, he said, “There will be no compensation for the homestay.”
He urged restraint, saying, “Any action we take here will have a reaction in Assam. We should be very conscious and careful.”
