Meghalaya power dept cracks down on theft, geniune consumers bear cost: Goyal

SHILLONG, JUN 25: The Meghalaya Power Department has intensified its drive against electricity theft, with Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Power Sanjay Goyal saying on Thursday that investigations are conducted daily across the state to curb losses.
Goyal said the department’s investigation wing works throughout the corporation, not just in pockets of Garo Hills. “We have investigation wing, not only in Garo Hills areas which are just small areas but in entire corporation, we do this as a routine and daily kind of activity,” Goyal said. “Because this is direct loss to corporation and through you I would appeal to the public that those who are genuine consumers, they face problems because of these kind of illegal practices by very few of them.”He clarified that power theft is not widespread, but action is being taken wherever violations are found. “As I said it is not common, it is happening in certain areas, we are taking up the activities which are mandated to act under the law. The Electricity Act allow us to take action against such individuals who are involve into illegal theft of electricity, this is not allow under the law,” he stated.Goyal stressed that illegal power draw directly impacts honest consumers. “It brings loss to the corporation and side by side it brings more financial burden to the genuine consumers because somewhere somebody is getting impacted,” he said.The official added that the department continues to detect and penalize offenders. “We have our investigation wing, we keep on checking these kinds of illegal activities and we raise the compensation bill and people pay it also,” Goyal said.
