SHILLONG, JUL 24: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Friday launched the Meghalaya School Performance Grading Index 2025-26, a new tool to assess all 11,443 recognized schools in the state.
Based on certified UDISE+ 2025-26 data, the MSPGI will score schools out of 1,000 points across 43 indicators in five areas — Accessibility, Digital Education, Infrastructure, NEP Activities, and Quality. Each school will receive a Report Card with its score, grade and rank.Schools will be placed in 17 grades, from Utkarsh to Akanshi-10.
The framework mirrors the Centre’s national PGI, but applies it at the school level for the first time in the country, officials said.
Rymbui said the goal is not to shame schools but to help them identify gaps.
“The purpose is not to demean any school… it is to give them where they are standing so they can reflect and improve,” he said.
He noted Meghalaya’s state PGI score has improved from 401.62 in 2022-23 to 525.71 in 2025-26, moving from Akanshi-3 to Akanshi-1.
The department said schools should use the report cards to plan improvements with teachers and SMCs.
District and Block officials will use the data to target support, while top-performing schools will act as peer-learning models.
Rymbui added that the MSPGI, developed with SEMAM, will complement existing inspections and help strengthen the state’s future performance in the national PGI.
