SHILLONG, AUG 10: The Khasi Students’ Union, Shillong Mihngi Circle on Monday gave the Urban Affairs Department one week to demolish an “unauthorized” structure at the CBI campus in Mawdiangdiang, warning of protests if no action is taken.
KSU General Secretary Samuel Kharbani said a delegation met the Director of Urban Affairs after the department confirmed that approval was issued only for an “office-cum-residential complex”.
“There was no permission for a temple. We have urged the Director to demolish the illegal structure and not allow any deviation from the approved plan,” Kharbani said.
The Director has sought time to review the issues point-wise.
Kharbani said since the land was allotted by Urban Affairs, the onus lies on that department to act.
The union added it did not approach the CBI directly as officials were “unresponsive” during an earlier visit.
“We are giving a one-week ultimatum. Failing which, we will hold a protest at either the Director’s office or the CBI office,” Kharbani said.
He further questioned the CBI’s stance.
“How can the CBI speak of upholding principles in the state when it is carrying out illegal construction within its own campus,” he asked.
