SHILLONG, JUL 7: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) Jowai Circle has written to the Meghalaya Rural Bank seeking compliance with local holidays on July 8 and 9 for the Behdienkhlam Festival.
In its letter to the General Manager (In-charge), JSU Jowai Circle asked the bank to direct all branches under its jurisdiction, especially the Jowai and Mihmyntdu branches, to remain closed on the notified dates.
“The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Jowai Circle, respectfully requests your office to issue immediate instructions to all Branch Managers… to observe the officially declared local holidays on 8th and 9th July 2026 in connection with the celebration of Behdienkhlam Festival 2026,” the letter signed by General Secretary Mewario Pyrtuh stated.
The Union highlighted the cultural significance of the festival, saying: “Behdienkhlam is the most important religious and cultural festival of the Pnar community. Observing these holidays will demonstrate respect for the traditions, culture, and sentiments of the people of West Jaintia Hills.”
JSU further urged the bank to act promptly to ensure uniformity across branches.
“We earnestly request that the necessary directions be issued at the earliest so that all concerned branches comply with the official local holiday notification. We are confident that your office will give this matter the attention it deserves and take appropriate action in the interest of maintaining goodwill and public harmony,” Pyrtuh wrote.
