SHILLONG, JUNE 21: Along with the rest of the World, the 5th International Day of Yoga was observed today with the theme “Yoga for Heart” at DC Park, Tura where Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura Ram Singh graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The programme was organised by District Medical and Health Office (DM&HO), West Garo Hills Tura.
Speaking on the occasion, Ram Singh informed about various health benefits and fitness associated with the regular practise of yoga in our daily life. Mentioning about the sedentary lifestyle of the people these days, he urged everyone to devote at least one hour for physical exercise or practise yoga in order to remain fit and healthy. Moreover, he also expressed his satisfaction to see many people including youth taking care of their health and doing morning walk, etc nowadays and added that he does 10 km run and practise surya namaskar every morning.
Further, he said that taking precautionary measures for health and wellness of a person is always better than spending lot of money for medical treatment later and therefore, he encouraged everyone to practise regularly and enjoy long term benefits in health, happiness and wellbeing.
In his keynote address, Dr. Sambu Aryal, Medical Officer, Yoga and Naturopathy said that Yoga is an Art and Science for Healthy living based on an extremely subtle science which focuses on bringing harmony between body and mind. He also informed that the word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root “Yuj” meaning “to join” symbolising the union of persons body and consciousness and added that the aim of yoga is to overcome all kinds of suffering with holistic health, happiness and harmony and thus known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many lifestyle related disorders.
Further, he stated that few studies have also revealed the benefits of practising yoga which provides stability of Autonomic nervous system during stress, improve body flexibility, physical efficiency, improve cognitive functions such as concentration, memory, learning efficiency and helps obesity, diabetics, heart ailment, etc.
During the function, different Yoga Aasnas was also demonstrated by Dr. Sambu Aryal where Deputy Commissioner along with his wife, medical officers and other yoga enthusiasts of the town join in to celebrate the International Day of Yoga. Moreover, there was also a free medical health check up after the function.
Dr. M R Sangma, District Medical and Health Officer, Tura, Dr. I M Sangma, DMCHO and Dr. Debrabata Das, Ayurvedic Physician, Member, Marwari Yuva Munch were among others who spoke on the occasion.
