SHILLONG, SEPT 26: Meghalaya tourism department celebrated the “One Billion Tourists, One Billion Opportunities”, universal theme for this year’s World Tourism Day, with a series of programmes aimed at maximizing the immense potential of tourism to drive inclusive economic growth, protect the environment and promote sustainable development and a life of dignity for all.
“One Billion Tourists, One Billion Opportunities” is celebrated across the globe on the September 27. This year’s celebration focused on the global potential of tourism for socio-economic development.
In East Khasi hills, cleanliness drives were organised at important tourist spots and places of importance including Motphran, Lady Hydari Park and Wards’ Lake where a large number of people especially the youths took part enthusiastically in the programme.
The day was also graced by the presence of the Parliamentary Secretary, Tourism, Kennedy C Khyriem, Chairman MTDC, David Nongrum, Principal Secretary, Tourism, R V Suchiang and Director, Tourism, RC Sohkhlet.
Later in the day, Khyriem inaugurated the Cafetaria at Wards’Lake called the Bamboo Hut Cafe, a unit of the MTDC.- By Our Reporter
