TURA, APR 19: Win Wiary Shillong defeated Northern United Cricket Club Tura yesterday in the final match of the Franco T20 blast cricket tournament, which got underway from April 1 at Alotgre stadium.
Wining the toss Win Wiary Shillong chose to bat first and scored 139 at the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. Chasing the target of 140 Northern United Cricket Club Tura managed to score 84 runs at the loss of all wickets in 19 overs.
Over 1000 people at the stadium witnessed the high-powered match.
Suraj Chetry of Win Wiary Shillong got four wickets and scored 15 runs and was declared the man of the match. All top honour were awarded to Win Wiary Shillong. Debraj Shrestha bagged the best batsman, Anish Charak bagged the best bowler and Rohit Rai bagged the man of the series title.
A total of 20 teams vied for the title in the third edition of the tournament, which is organised by Northern United Club Tura in collaboration with Tura District Cricket Association (TDCA).
The tournament is held in memory of a young cricketer who passed away in 2012. Franco Arengh had contributed to the promotion of cricket in Tura. The club has been holding the tournament to honour and remember him.
Franco’s father Corlette Shira gave away the trophy and cash prize to the winning team. Former president of Meghalaya Cricket Association and BJP leader Billikid A Sangma, former cricket Arup Nag, advisor TDCA Bruce P Marak also attended the prize distribution ceremony.
Speaking at the gathering Shira thanked the organiser for keeping the name of his son alive by organizing the tournament and promoting cricket in a big way.
“We need to promote cricket in a big way in Garo hills. We have lots of talents in this part of the world. They need to be horned and given scope to play and play more. I would take up the matter with BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur for promoting cricket in Garo hills”, said Billykid.
He said that Alotgre stadium in Tura is one of the best in Meghalaya and BCCI should accord facilities to give the stadium the much-needed facelift.
“We are trying our level best to promote cricket talents in Tura. If given support from different stakeholders, we will be able to do more in the field of cricket in Garo hills”, said Chongkim Sangma, secretary of Northern United Club Tura.-From Our Correspondent
