SHILLONG, JUNE 21: William Carrey University (WCU) chancellor prof Ken Gnanakan on Wednesday said that the credibility of the private universities in Meghalaya have been questioned because of the recent discovery of fraud committed by the CMJ University.
Admitting that the CMJ University episode has certainly affected the university he is heading, Gnanakan however informed that the WCU was established in 2007 was out of the good wishes of the former chief minister D.D Lapang and the then deputy chief minister Mukul Sangma who is the present chief minister and claimed that the university has lived up with whatever the legislative provisions have envisaged..
Gnanakan also said the university is ready to answer any query relating to its genuineness
On the delay to have the university’s courses recognized by the University Grant Commission (UGC), Gnanakan said that WCU degrees have not been accorded recognition by the UGC and informed, “These are things that will be coming because the institution is on the course of being evaluated.” He said the WCU has invited the UGC and other bodies to evaluate its progress.
Speaking about the WCU its vice chancellor Dr Paul Mohan Raj said, “We have a definite purpose… to equip the people in the social, political, economic and cultural spheres”. He said the university is all for integration of the traditional knowledge and modern academic research to push the people to other stride.
The WCU officials also informed reporters during a press conference that the university apart from academics is also venturing into developing social economic entrepreneurship through its integrated research programme that involves research and marketing of traditional medicinal plants, fish farming, vegetable and fruit growing.
Elaborating about the unique research and business venture, Raj said, “We have entered into a strategic partnership with Grace City (Real Estate) for the project,” adding that Grace City will focus on branding, promoting and marketing relationship with government, non-government agencies besides business and commercial groups.
Informing that fish farming, vegetable and fruit growing are the three projects undertaken by the university at present, Mohanraj said that joint venture will see the development of aquaculture project in Umsning, Ri-bhoi district shortly.- By Our Reporter
