SHILLONG, MAY 28: A Ronald Kino L. Nongbet goal helped Meghalaya piped Odisha by a solitary goal and became the title holder of the under 15 National Sub-junior Coca-Cola Cup on Tuesday.
Playing under humid temperature and in front of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and Indian football captain Sunil Chettri, the boys from the hills went on the offensive and controlled the game for about seventy percent of the game.
The doggedness of the Meghalaya boys bore fruit in the forty minutes of the game when Ronald carried the ball from the right flank into the box and took a shot penetrating the opponent goal post. The euphoria of the lads from the hill state was electrifying as the goal made sure that they lifted the trophy.
To make it to the finals the Meghalaya boys defeated Karnataka by a comprehensive margin of 6-0, Uttar Pradesh 10-0 and Kerala (1-0). They settle to a goalless draw against Jharkhand.
Talking to this website over the phone the ecstatic coach Jeffery Warlarpih said, “Despite hot temperature the boys really gave their best and they deserved the title”.
Meghalaya Football Association secretary Larsing Ming- who is also the promoter of Shillong Lajong- said, “The boys did a wonderful job. We from the association will see how we can felicitate them after as they have brought laurel to the state by winning at a national level.”
