According to legend it is believed that God displeased with mankind’s disobedience planted an oak tree which grew day by day to monstrous heights and widths overshadowing whole portions of earth. This tree of gloom Dieng Iei made standing crops wilt, threatening to destroy all plant life as well as man.
Seeking a solution before the tree destroyed everything, mankind gathered and decided to cut down the tree. They started hacking away from dawn to suck lopping off a bit of the trunk each day only to come back the next day to find the tree whole again. While they were brooding in fear and confusion, a little wren called Phreit came flying by and offered to reveal the secret of Dieng Iei if man allowed it to feed freely in their paddy fields. Man agreed and Phreit revealed that the secret was the licking of the tiger that helped the tree restore itself and advised them to fortify the portion of the trunk that they had hewn by placing knives and axes against it at night. The next morning the men discovered bloodstains of their axes on which the tiger had cut his tongue. Some weeks after they were successful in bringing down U Diengiei. The pact made with the Little Phreit marked the first gesture of man towards repentance and humility which was why God had granted man success in felling Dieng Iei.
