SHILLONG, OCT 8: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge District Council Affairs (DCA) Prestone Tynsong on Thursday said the term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) was extended due to two pending processes – delimitation and preparation of electoral rolls.
“Why we extended the GHADC election, it is only because of two issues, one is we set up the delimitation committee and now the delimitation committee is almost in the final stage,” Tynsong said.
Explaining the process, he said, “Once the delimitation committee submits the report to the District Council, then the District Council has to bring it to the House and the House will pass this delimitation report and send it to the Governor for approval, that is one part.”
“The second part is again, you are aware that the SIR final publication will take place on the 26th of this month, this SIR will again be adopted by the GHADC for the electoral roll and on the basis of that they will prepare the electoral roll, separate electoral roll which has to be done by the respective RO in the Garo Hills region,” he added.
Tynsong further said that due to recent amendments, segregation of voters has become necessary.
“Because amendment has taken place, then they have to segregate the non-tribal and the tribal voters. So these are the two processes which need to be done and once that is done, then election will be fixed,” he said.
