Tear-gas incident uncalled for, says James

SHILLONG, OCT 10: NPP leader and cabinet minister James K Sangma on Monday referred to the recent firing of tear-gas against protesting contractual teachers as ‘uncalled for’.

When sought for his comment, Sangma, who is also a former home minister of the state, said that the incident should have been avoided.

“Any kind of force used on not just teachers but any section of the society who wants to peacefully protest is uncalled for and very unfortunate. It should not have happened,” he expressed regrets.

The October 6-tear gas incident against the agitating contractual teachers, who took out a protest march to the secretariat, had drawn severe criticism from all quarters of society. Pregnant teachers and children were affected during the incident. NGOs have demanded action against the police personnel for their action without any permission from the concerned authority.

Meanwhile, the home department has sought a report from the district administration on the tear-gas incident before taking any action on the matter.
