SHILLONG, JULY 3: The Supreme Court has refused to interfere with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order imposing a blanket ban on unscientific rat-hole coal mining in Meghalaya since last year.

The apex court also dismissed the civil appeal filed by the State Coordination Committee of Coal Owners Miners and Dealers Forum (SCCCOMDF), Shillong after the latter’s counsel sought for withdrawal.

“The civil appeal is disposed of as withdrawn with liberty to move  an appropriate application for appropriate clarification before the NGT, Principal Bench, New Delhi,” the apex court said in its order.

The order also states that the counsel for the appellant, on instructions, seeks permission of the court to withdraw the civil appeal with liberty to move an appropriate application for appropriate clarification before the NGT.

The SCCOMDF in a statement said that the case was listed before the court of the Chief Justice of India on July 1.

“During course of argument, the court refused to accept the plea submitted by the counsel of the appellant and did not interfere with the order passed by the NGT and instead dismiss their plea and directed them to raise the issue before the NGT again,” the forum said.

Subsequently, the counsel of the appellant failed to convince the court and have withdrawn the appeal with a request for permission the raise the issue before the NGT, it stated.- By Our Reporter
