Speaker intervenes as CM, Conrad duels in the assembly

Shillong, Sept 5: A 30.5 km-long road which was never completed even after 36 years in remote West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya  led to war of words between Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and Opposition leader Conrad Sangma when the former accused the latter that the NCP led government in 2009  had de-sanction six bridges that led to further delay.

Speaker Charles Pyngrope had to intervene on the first day of the autumn session of the assembly to dissuade the two leaders playing the blame game.

The road construction was sanctioned in 1976 at an initial cost of Rs 388.73 lakh, just four years after Meghalaya became a full fledged state. Speaking about the incompletion of the road, chief minister Mukul Sangma informed that the Dimapara – Deku bazar road  has never been used.

Replying on the status of the road raised by opposition leader Conrad Sangma, the chief minister told the assembly, “There were missing gaps between 11 – 15 kms along the road and the road has never been used.” He, however, informed that the government is giving top priority to the completion of this road.

The temperature in the house rose when chief minister blamed the NCP led government for further delaying the completion of the road by de-sanctioning of the six bridges.

This forced opposition leader and NCP leader Conrad Sangma to protest saying that the   de-sanctioning was made due to fund constraints in the department. He said,    “In 2003-05, the government had sanctioned Rs 800 crore schemes under the PWD against an actual budget of only Rs 100 crore.” – By Our Reporter
