Shillong, November 16: A sub inspector Sudarshan Sangma, unarmed branch constable Claipson M Marak and MPRO operator constable BAsant Lama were arrested on Saturday for their involvement in a robbery case at Shillong bye pass near Mawryngkneng village in East Khasi hills district earlier this month.
The three were arrested by the Shillong’s special police cell for their direct involvement in looting a truck (AS-01-EC-0515) loaded with non ferrous scrap (including copper, brass and aluminuium) worth Rs 20.10 lakh on November 7, East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang told reporters at a news conference on Saturday evening.
The three cops were all attached to the newly set up police station at Mawryngkneng village, about 50 kilometers away from here.
The truck loaded with 150 bags of non ferrous scrap including 51 bags of copper scrap of 2480 kgs, 34 bags brass scrap of 2273 kgs and 60 bags of allumunium scrap of 2625 kgs was dispatched on November 6, from Silchar to the godown of Harsh Metal in Guwahati, Assam.
However, on reaching Mawrynkneng village on November 7, a group of people hijacked the truck and took it towards the Shillong bye-pass, while the driver and a staff of the company were taken in a white swift vehicle towards Diengpasoh and kept there till 7. 30 pm after which they were released..
“It was found that 127 bags worth Rs 20 lakhs were stolen from the truck,” Kharkhrang informed..
As the crime took place during broad daylight, the police based on FIR lodged with the police station concerned detained the truck driver, Saidullah Alam Laskar and the company’s staff Deep Kumar Nath for interrogation.
“But after investigation the driver and Nath were not found guilty,” Kharkhrang said. However, based on the statements of the two, the investigating team zeroed down on the three police personnels. He said the mobile phones belonging to the driver and the staff were recovered from the house of constable Claipson M Marak and the Swift (ML 05 K 8473) which was used by the police personnel for committing the robbery was also seized.
The swift vehicle belongs to the SI of the police station.
Kharkhrang said, “The three accused have been remanded to five police custody by the court,” even as he added investigation is on to nab the other persons involved in executing the crime as well as to find out where the stolen goods have been kept by them.
Kharkhrang also said departmental action would be taken against the three police personnel. The three might even be dismissed from the service.”
Condemning the act, Kharkhrang said the Meghalaya police is a force having more than 12, 000 personnel who are working hard day and night but some black sheep in the force are trying to tarnish the image of the entire of the department.
Kharkhrang also requested public cooperation and support to bring to the notice of the department on crimes of such a nature. He warned, “Stern action will be taken against such personnel who are trying to degrade the police forces.” – By Our Reporter
