SHILLONG, FEB 8: Meghalaya government has constituted a magisterial inquiry to be headed by the East Garo hills deputy commissioner Vijay Kumar Mantri to probe the attack in Williamanagar jail by the militants that led to the subsequent killing of the assistant jailor and the warden even as it promised to pay seven lakh and fifty thousand rupees compensation to the family of the two deceased.

The ngos led by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) took out a procession to protest against the killings of assistant jailor Neil Warjri and a jail warder Sarai Thabah on February 2 after militants shot them inside the Williamnagar jail.

The black flag march, participated by hundreds of people including government officials and ngos, condemned the cold blooded murder of the two jail officials by the militants. The march began from the office of the KSU in Jaiaw and converged in the state secretariat where the ngos led by the KSU leader met the state chief secretary WMS Pariat and placed their demands.

Emerging from the meeting with Pariat, KSU president Daniel Khyriem said, “The chief secretary promise to give compensation of Rs 7.5 lakh which would be released soon to the next of kin of the two jail staffs.”

Khyriem, however, informed that they have demanded that the government give a job to one of the family members of the two deceased.

The ngos have also demanded that the government must provide adequate security coverage to the Khasi employees posted in the militant infested Garo Hills region. Khyriem informed that the government has assured it will try its best to ensure security to all Khasis, including government employees working in various parts of Garo hills region from militants attack.

Khyriem said that the chief secretary has directed the East Garo hills district deputy commissioner to submit the report of inquiry within a month. – By Our Reporter
