SHILLONG, AUG 8: The Meghalaya government on Saturday said the Shillong Ropeway project will not affect water sources or the environment, after a joint inspection with the PHE, Forest Department, Shillong Municipal Board and Raid Laban Dorbar Pyllun.
Joint Secretary In-Charge Tourism, R.M. Kurbah, said water concerns have been addressed.
“The water source is ahead towards Lawsohtun, beyond Nepali School. This 800-metre stretch has no water sources,” she said.
Kurbah said the initial DPR proposed cables at 25 metres, which would have meant cutting trees across the channel. The plan was then revised.
“We asked for the cable and tower height to be raised. The new DPR provides about 40 metres of clearance,” she said.
According to the department, tree felling is restricted to six 12×12 metre tower stations.
“We have cut 544 trees only at tower locations, all within forest land. As per 1:10 norms, we have planted 5,044 trees on government land,” Kurbah said.
She added the project will enhance the city’s landscape.
“This project is not affecting water or the environment. In fact, it will add to the beautification of this place. It is very important for the state,” she said, citing Sikkim’s urban ropeway as a model.
On slope stability, Kurbah said restoration work will be taken up and the Forest Department will manage greenery in cleared areas.
“We appeal to people to come to the department for any clarification. If it is affecting you or anybody, we will address it,” she said.
KEC-TCL Project Head JP Singh said environmental norms are being followed.
“The main challenges for any ropeway are material transportation and protecting the local ecology. We will ensure nothing goes against the environment,” Singh said.
