SHILLONG, JUL 28: The Meghalaya government on Monday said the Shillong Peak Ropeway Project has received all required clearances and construction will start from 15 October.
In a clarification, the Meghalaya Ropeway Development Authority said the Rs 151 crore project is being taken up under the PM-DevINE scheme with Rs 80.89 crore from the New Development Bank and Rs 70.11 crore from the DoNER Ministry.
The 896-metre ropeway with 13 European-standard cabins is being built in partnership with Riat Laban Dorbar Pyllun.
Officials said it will ease tourist movement, create local jobs, and help cut emissions by reducing road traffic to the peak.
The Authority added that forest clearance, compensatory afforestation, tree-felling permission for 544 trees, and NOCs from the Airports Authority, Air Force and Army have all been obtained.
Public consultations were also held in 2022.
The government said the project balances development with conservation and remains a key part of its tourism push.
