SHILLONG, JUL 30: The Shillong Bar Association has suspended senior advocate AH Hazarika pending probe after a law intern accused him of molestation, and also condemned the alleged assault on him by non-state actors.
The Executive Committee met on July 29 following media reports and social media posts on July 28-29.
The Association said it “vehemently condemns the act alleged to have been committed by AH Hazarika, Advocate against his lady intern,” adding that “such conduct, if established, violates professional ethics, constitutional values, and the dignity of the individual.”
It resolved to issue a show-cause notice and suspend Hazarika’s membership “pending investigation and inquiry by the competent authorities viz. the Police agency and the Disciplinary Committee of the State Bar Council.”
At the same time, the Bar body expressed concern over Hazarika being allegedly “apprehending, assaulting and parading” from his Keating Road office to Sadar Police Station.
“Regardless of the circumstances or allegations involved, no individual deserves to be treated in such a manner… Such acts amount to taking the law into one’s own hands,” it said.
The Association called for “a lawful, impartial and expeditious investigation into both the alleged misconduct… and also the reported vigilantism by the non-state actors.”
