SHILLONG, JUL 26: An intensive four-day search operation by the State Disaster Response Force concluded Sunday morning with the recovery of a missing person’s body from the Wahniangleng River near Phra Mer, Mylliem.
The body was pulled out at around 7:10 AM on July 26, 2026, officials said.
The SDRF launched the operation on July 22 following reports that a resident of Phra Mer had gone missing.
Working with Mawngap Police and with support from residents of Laitkroh and Phra Mer, SDRF teams scoured the gorges and riverbanks.
A Rubber Inflatable Boat was used to search the stretch from Mawphlang Dam downstream.
Searches on July 23 and 24 covered both upstream and downstream sections of the Wahniangleng River.
Despite extensive efforts, there was no sign of the missing person.A breakthrough came on July 25 when local residents spotted the body in a narrow, difficult-to-access part of the river.
SDRF personnel attempted a recovery but called it off due to strong water currents and unsafe conditions.
The team resumed work at first light on July 26 and successfully retrieved the body.
It was later handed over to Mawngap Police for post-recovery legal procedures.
The Directorate of Civil Defence & Home Guards said the operation involved coordinated efforts between SDRF, police and community members throughout the search period.
