SHILLONG, JUNE 2: Meghalaya deputy chief minister RC Laloo said that schools and colleges should encourage sporting activities in their institution by making it part of their curriculum even as he urged the youths to take up sports not just as a hobby but also as a job option.
Speaking at the first anniversary of the Shillong Cricket Academy held at the indoor stadium of JN complex on Saturday, Laloo lauded the effort to the academy for taking a step forward in involving the young children and inculcating in them a spirit of sportsmanship and discipline.
Laloo said, “The youths of the state should take up sports professionally. Educational institutions should encourage more sporting activities in their curriculum.” He also felt that opportunity offered by coaching academies like the cricket academy should not be missed.
Laloo’s cabinet colleague AL Hek also congratulated the Shillong Cricket Academy under the aegis of the Shillong Cricket Association for its contribution towards the development of cricket in the Meghalaya. He wished the academy success and called upon the youths to aspire to achieve the highest level of cricket in the country.
SCA president Naba Bhattacharjee spoke about the objectives of the academy and its genesis while the academy director Gideon Kharkongor presented the report of the first year’ activities of the academy. He said that in such a short time the academy has been able to ensure increase in the number of cricket aspirants and also quality of the game in the state. He informed that in a recent tournament held in Nagaland the academy has sent two players from the under 14 category to play from the state team.
The other highlights of the one year anniversary celebration included drill displays from the students of the academy besides songs and dances. Coaches were also felicitated on the occasions. Others who spoke included Arijit Ghosh, Parents’ Representative to the academy and Peter J. Lamare, the technical director.- By Our Reporter
