SHILLONG, AUG 26: Revenue and Disaster Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday said supplementary demands of Rs 17.85 crore are required to utilize Central aid already released for two disaster mitigation projects.
Replying to a cut motion, Rymbui said, “This is not a fresh request for sanction. These projects have already been approved and Central assistance released.
“Of the total, Rs 12.27 crore is for Forest Fire Risk Management in four districts – West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi and East Garo Hills – and Rs 5.58 crore for Lightning Safety, he said.
“Mitigation is distinct from relief. Relief addresses immediate consequences, whereas mitigation seeks to reduce risk and severity of future disasters,” he added.
Rymbui said Meghalaya will get Rs 97 crore under SDMF from 2026-31, with 90% Central share.
He also said additional Rs 2.39 crore for State shares, Rs 22 crore for SDMF works and Rs 4.32 crore for preparedness have been sought.
