SHILLONG, OCT 5: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday said police personnel caught in the Khasi Students Union (KSU)’s sting operation on alleged extortion have been suspended, while ruling out action against the district police chief.
Tynsong said the government learnt about the incident on the same day the KSU conducted the sting.
“That day itself when KSU members went to the spot, we came to know. I saw it on social media and immediately instructed the DGP that action has to be taken. The DGP and SP have done the job,” he said.
Calling the KSU’s move a welcome step, he said, “If anybody informs us about such mischief committed by any government agency, it is welcome. Stern corrective measures will be taken against the employees or concerned officers or police members.”
On the demand to remove the SP, he said, “Removal for what? It is not the SP who organised or asked for extortion. Maybe some isolated cases happen like this. It is good that it was brought to higher authority and action was taken – suspended.”
