SHILLONG, APR 8: Cabinet minister and BJP leader Sanbor Shullai on Wednesday said the BJP central leadership has given a “green signal” to field a candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, adding that he is prepared to contest if the party decides to nominate him.
“The reports from the state president and party workers….(has been submitted to) party high command. The party from Delhi has given a green signal that we have to contest. BJP has to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha bypoll,” Shullai told reporters.
He noted that the formal process of inviting applications has not yet begun.
“(However), that day we had the 47th foundation day of the party, they said that the central leadership has given a green signal to the state president (but he) is yet to call the application,” he added.
When asked if he was willing to contest the bypoll, Shullai said, “I am a disciplined soldier of the party. If the party high command or state command asks me to contest, so as a disciplined soldier I have to go to the battlefield and fight.”
Recalling his nomination in 2019, he said, “During the year 2019, unexpectedly three weeks before the MP elections, from the party office at 12 o’clock midnight they called me and informed that a mail came from Delhi that I have been fielded as a candidate for the BJP in 2019. As a disciplined soldier of the party, the next day I immediately started preparing. Imagine, in only three weeks’ time I got to campaign for 36 constituencies.”
“This time I don’t know who the party will nominate as its candidate,” Shullai added.
