SHILLONG, FEB 16: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Central Executive Council (CEC) on Tuesday demanded the state government put on hold the current distribution of ration cards. The demand was in view of the alleged striking down of the households belonging to marginalized indigenous families from the list of beneficiaries.
“We demand the government to put on hold the current distribution of ration cards until and unless the grievances of the deprived tribal households are address,” KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Expressing resentment over the process of issuing ration cards in East Khasi hills district, he alleged that numerous indigenous households were struck off from the list and deprived of their rights by the district administration.
Jyrwa further claimed that as per information from reliable sources, the union was made aware that many non-tribal households were issued ration cards by the said administration.
“The union is baffled as to how and through what procedure were these non-tribal households were issued ration cards whereas the genuine tribal household were rejected of this benefit?” he questioned.-By Our Reporter
