SHILLONG, MAR 2: An Under Trial Trisoner (UTP) Suresh Chettri in the Shillong District Jail was shot from the leg by police after he gave the escort team a slip before he could be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court on Monday.
The incident took place at about 11. 15 am when 28 UTPs were taken to the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CMJ) court escorted at least 15 police personnel led by Prosecuting Investigation Officer (PIO) DK Prasad.
Thirty nine years old Chetri sustained bullet injury on his left thigh when a police gunman had to open fire to refrain him from escaping, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem told reporters.
Earlier, two policemen chasing Chettri opened 10 to 11 blank shots as a warning so that he surrendered. But the UTP did not pay any heed to the blank firing and instead tried to flung a stone at one of the policemen near the office of the All India Radio.
But Syiem informed, “ Before he could throw the stone on the policeman, one of the personnel shot him from his leg.”
An injured Chettri was later admitted in the Shillong Civil Hospital for treatment. According to Syiem, Chettri had shown sign of restlessness since morning before he and others were taken to the court.
Syiem informed that Chettri is a habitual criminal involved in robbery and burglary. “There are three cases registered against him, while two in Sadar Police Station, one is in Rynjah police station,” he said.
Chetri was first arrested in 2009 in a robbery case, the second arrest came in October last year for burglary and then on December last year for theft case.
Syiem said that police are taking up a case under escape from lawful custody against Chettri. He also patted the policemen on duty.
A police official who was in the escort team said Chettri escaped because the law prohibits the use of handcuff on UTP. He informed if the UTP had escaped the policemen on duty would have been in trouble. – By Our Reporter
