SHILLONG, MAR 20: The state government is examining the feasibility of up-grading Shillong Polytechnic to an Engineering College said Meghalaya deputy chief minister RC Laloo, who is holding the Higher & Technical Education portfolio in the assembly on Wednesday.

The Shillong Polytechnic was established in 1965 and offers courses of civil engineering, electrical engineering besides others.

Responding to a cut-motion moved by Nongkrem legislator Ardent M Basaiawmoit on upgradation of technical education institutions in Meghalaya to full-fledged engineering institute, Laloo, however, said, “This many not be feasible with the present strength of faculty and their qualifications besides limited numbers of class rooms, laboratories and others.”

Laloo said the upgradation of polytechnic to Engineering college would only be feasible if certain points like construction a new building, additional class rooms, laboratory rooms, library and workshop along with all required facilities are taken up.

Laloo said, “There is need to create new posts for the required faculty and supporting staff to run degree level programme of engineering discipline and filling up of the same.”

Apart from Shillong, Meghalaya has two other polytechnics – Jowai and Tura both established in the year 2001.

On the upgradation of these two Polytechnics Colleges to engineering, Laloo however said, “The up-gradation of Jowai and Tura polytechnics does not arise as these two institutes were formally taken over by the government as recently as January 3, 2013.”- By Our Reporter
