SHILLONG, FEB 6: Three hundred and fifty-five candidates belonging to different political parties as well as Independents filed their nomination papers from sixty constituencies in the state for the upcoming Meghalaya assembly elections slated for February 23.

The final list of the confirmed candidates will however be known only after the scrutiny and withdrawal of the nomination papers.

There is a slight increase in the number of candidates compared to the 2008 assembly elections. In 2008 elections there were as many as 338 candidates.

On Wednesday which was the last day of filing nomination papers fifty-seven candidates from eleven districts and four sub divisions have filed their nomination papers.

In Shillong, four candidates including former KSU leader and  Khun Hynniewtrep Awakening Movement (KHNAM) president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon filed his nomination papers from Mawlai constituency.

The others to file their nomination includes Mawsynram HSPDP candidate and journalist Starfing Pdahsiej, South Shillong SP candidate Vinod Kumar Joshi and Nongkrem independent candidate Elston Roy Kharkongor.

In West Khasi hills seven candidates filed their nomination papers for different constituency. MDP candidate Bokstar Nongrang and HSPDP candidate  Nit Shabong from Mairang, NPP candidate Set Singh Dkhar and Congress substitute candidate Nestingdhar Nongdhar from Nongstoin, Independent candidate Andrew Charles Gare and LJP candidate Bonifirst Nongrem from Rambrai Jyrngam and Independent candidate Livingstone R Marak from Mawshynrut constituency were the ones to file their nomination papers.

In South West Khasi Hills NCP candidate Desmond Wanshong filed his nomination papers for Ranikor constituency.

While in West Garo hills district Rophul Marak was the last candidate to file nomination from Rongara – Siju constituency.

Meanwhile, the total number of candidates who have filed their nomination in district and sub-division wise – Jaintia hills (East and West) – 4, Ri Bhoi district – 4, West Garo hills – 16, South West Garo hills – 3, South Garo hills – 4, East Garo hills – 1, and Sohra sub-division – 1.

The twenty-four constituencies from the five districts of Garo hills have the highest number of candidates who have filed their nomination for the upcoming polls in the state.- By Our Reporter
