SHILLONG, JUN 23: BJP Meghalaya has put the candidate question for the Shillong Lok Sabha byelection on hold, with state president Rikman G Momin saying Tuesday that the party will act only after the Election Commission of India notifies the poll dates.

The remarks came hours after former West Shillong MLA Mohendro Rapsang joined the party.

When asked if Rapsang could be in contention for the parliamentary seat, Momin ruled out any state-level speculation.

“This question has been asked for the last three-four months,” Momin said.

On Rapsang’s possible candidature, he clarified: “If Rapsang wants to contest, he said that is not in my head, that is parliamentary election which will be decided by central leadership.”

Momin said the party is in a wait-and-watch mode as the ECI is yet to announce the byelection schedule following the vacancy caused by the passing sitting MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon.

“Our central leadership is waiting for the announcement of the Election Commission of India. Till now, ECI is yet to announce. There is nothing to rush. We are getting ready with our own work,” he said.
