Night blockade in Jaintia hills

SHILLONG, JAN 23: Peeved with the failure of the state government to make public the report of the September 24-Mookhep firing incident killing at least two civilians and injuring several others in East Jaintia hills, the conglomerate of nine ngos from Jaintia hills called for a two-day night road blockade starting from January 28.

The night road blockade will be effective in East and West Jaintia hills districts and start from 7 pm of January 28 to 5am of January 29, a joint statement from the ngos issued on Friday said.

The ngos comprising of the JSM-CB, MPUF-CGB, RJYF-CB, HANM-JHU, JSU-ME, AJYWO-EJZ, HNYF-EJZ, JYF-EJ had also called 24 hours bandh on January 20.

The statement  said, “This decision for night road blockade  was taken after the state government completely turned a deaf ear to our demand.”

Two civilians – S Phawa and D Siangshai- were killed while several injured in a firing  at Mookhep village in East Jaintia hills district on September 24 last year during the economic blockade called by the MIPRL to protest against the NGT ban on coal mining in Meghalaya.

The state government had ordered magisterial inquiry headed by the additional district magistrate of West Jaintia hills district SS Syiemlieh and directed him to submit report on October 30.

“Even after two months, the report of the magisterial inquiry is yet to be made public by the state government. We strongly protest against this unacceptable attitude,” the statement said.

The ngos demanded the state government immediately make public the report as they and the people of the region have the right to know as to who are the culprits behind the indiscriminate firing killing two people.

Appealing to the public to support and cooperate with the ngos, the statement informed that the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has withdrawn its support from the conglomeration.- By Our Reporter
