SHILLONG, APR 18: The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) president and Nongkrem Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Saturday announced the party’s decision to launch a massive public agitation against the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government over its alleged apathy, bias, and disregard for the indigenous community.
The decision was taken at an emergent meeting of the party.
“We have several issues to place before the people. These include the style and functioning of the Meghalaya Public Service Commission and District Selection Committees in the recruitment process, the problems faced by teachers, environmental concerns, and the government’s adamant stand on tourism projects on Lumpongdeng Island, among others,” Basaiawmoit said in a video statement.
As announced earlier, the party will soon launch a massive public agitation to pressure the government to address issues affecting the people, including residents along the border.
“As a party, we can no longer wait and rely solely on government clarifications,” Basaiawmoit said.
The agitation will begin next week with a series of public meetings to sensitise people.
“It is high time we stop this continued destruction of the people and the state so that protection and preventive measures can be taken,” he added.
He urged citizens to attend the meetings in large numbers before the agitation is intensified.
“I urge the people of the state to come out in large numbers and attend the public meetings before we intensify our agitations to pressurize the government to address issues concerning the people and the state.”
The first public meeting will be held on April 22 at Motphran at 2 pm to highlight issues affecting the people and the state.
“We will also organize such public meetings in different parts of the state before we take a stern decision against the government,” Basaiawmoit said.
