SHILLONG, FEB 1: Congress national spokesman Tom Vadakkan today said the Union Budget presented by the BJP-led NDA government only reflected that the people of the North East region has been taken for a ride.
“They (BJP) talk great things when they come of Meghalaya and they are (even) ready to fund variety of religious organizations which is refused in this part of the country and still nothing in the Budget for the North East,” Vadakkan told journalists here on Thursday.
Stating that reality of the Budget is that the North East region has been taken for a ride, AICC leader said this is absolutely a situation that will be reflected in the elections that are coming in these states.
“We do hope and pray that this government reads the writing on the wall, mend its way or perishes. This is the reality of what we see in North East because nothing has been delivered to the people of the region,” he added.
Meghalaya is one among the three states in the North East – Nagaland and Tripura, which will go to polls on February 27.
On the other hand, AICC coordinator Bobita Sharma also lambasted the NDA-led government for scrapping the North East Industrial Promotion Policy (NEIPP) in 2015, which according to her has stopped investments from coming into the region.
“After that, the process of development has stopped because investments have not come in. So what we needed is for investments to come to the NE and people look forward for that in the budget,” she said.
According to her, like the rest of the country, the North East also need jobs and like the rest of the country, the region mainly needs development.
“Earlier, we had subsidy for transport and others but these are no longer there so who will come and invest in the NE and how will job be created is a question we want to ask the government,” Sharma said.
Stating that the country’s economy is in shambles, Vaddakan said, “Four wasted years thankfully this is the last budget of this government which is a trust-deficit government where farmers have lost trust in it.”
He said that despite the finance minister assurance, farmers are extremely disappointed in the country adding inadequate action on massive job deficit which clearly indicating the low priority on the job sector.
“Instead of providing jobs, the demonetisation the demon created a situation where in the informal sector being destroyed with a single blow where people instead of getting jobs have lost jobs. This is the plight of this country,” he added.
Terming the Modi government as a “deficit sarkar”, the AICC spokesman said the reality is the bye-election in Rajasthan, where the Congress has won.
“The writing on the walls is clear for this government who have not delivered its promises. The real story is in the by-poll of Rajasthan, people are suffering while the present government is busy supporting divisive forces and this country is asking questions and voices are raised in the state of Rajasthan,” he said.
“The issues are raised on freedom of creativity, expression, the question on what you eat, what religion follow, these are moral issues that are being raised and this budget matches their new concept of taking people for a ride,” he added.
Asked whether the victory in Rajasthan will give an upbeat for the Congress in Meghalaya, Vaddakan said that victory is of the people of India and it is not confined to the Indian National Congress only.
“Whether it is Meghalaya or whichever state, people of India are reacting. The writing on the wall is clear if they do not mend their ways, these reactions are going to be seen across the country. It is the people of Meghalaya who are watching and it is Congress who are reflecting the voices of the people, we are only raising issues which are affecting the people of India,” he stated.
